Transforming an ex-military Unimog into a cosy tiny home

Kyla Mackenzie and Louis Foster have perfectly combined practicality and adventure with their super cool home on wheels – a Unimog. With the help of Resene they have transformed the interior into a fun and vibrant homage to the Northland bush, painting the surfaces in a nature-inspired palette of primarily greens and oranges.

The couple met on Tinder a few years ago and, along with their three pups, are “a bunch of beach-loving, sun-chasing outdoor enthusiasts who love to get away from the city (and other people) and enjoy nature,” says Kyla. Attracted by the freedom of life on the road, they renovated and sold their home to fund their dream truck build. “Our vision was to have all the necessities (and more) of a well-built home on the back of a truck that can take us anywhere!”

Wondering what a Unimog is? They’re troop carriers in the field and thanks to their high weight capacity, make the perfect base for an off-road camper. This one in particular is a 1988 Mercedes-Benz formerly in use by the Australian military, and the couple have been documenting their reno on their Out The Gate Off-Road Instagram account.

To keep costs low and customise every element to suit their exact requirements, Louis and Kayla have done the majority of the build themselves, creating a warm, inviting and perfectly proportioned abode. “The vision was to have all the best parts of a home in the truck – a full-sized bed and shower, full-sized bench and sink and enough storage to fit all our miscellaneous adventure gear,” says Kyla. “This meant being creative with design and layout and thinking of some out-the-gate ideas.”

Louis drew inspiration from his years building architectural houses and the couple made an effort to use native and locally sourced (often recycled) timber to add warmth to their home.

The couple were inspired by the colours of the Northland bush and visited their local Resene ColorShop to fine-tune their palette.

Colour time

The couple wanted their truck to be unique and practical, not your standard run-of-the-mill camper. “That meant no shiny white walls and no boring vinyl upholstery. We wanted our campervan to be filled with colours you find in nature,” Kyla says. “Our inspiration came from the east coast of Northland. Vibrant orange clay banks surrounded by lush native bush – you can’t get much better than that!”

To fine-tune their undeniably bold palette and bounce ideas off a professional, they visited Resene ColorShop Whangārei. Resene expert Trevor Apeldoorn took them through their colour options and provided essential preparation advice for all the different surfaces in the camper.

Job done

Kyla shares that her favourite part of the transformation is seeing how well all the Resene colours they chose work together – no mean feat for such a tiny space.

“The greens are just so subtle yet so eye-catching, especially next to the wood detailing. Louis thinks his wooden ceiling slats are top notch and came out great, and I’d have to agree!” she laughs. “I absolutely loved the quality of the paint, too. It made cutting in and painting so easy, despite being a beginner.”

She also gives a special mention to the feature wall they created using Resene FX Faux Rust Effect. “I love how imperfectly perfect it is, and it really does look like rusted metal. It’s crazy! This is definitely something I would recommend to anyone who loves to be bold and different.”

Louis and Kyla’s advice for budding DIYers is that the devil is in the details. “Spend time to make a plan, draw it out, mark your layout on the ground and get a feel for the space before you commit to the build,” says Louis. “Once you are in the build, be proud of your work and use quality products. At the end of the day, you’ve just got to do the best you can do!”
