Demo to Reno super-couple Tyge and Christina Dellar are slowly making over their family’s forever home in Stillwater, Auckland. The couple have partnered with MasterStroke by Resene to bring their vision to life and after transforming their pool room, dining room and son Valor’s bedroom, we’re now catching up with them as they tackle their guest bedroom.
Their vision for the house is for it to feel like a large family home, but still super cosy with a touch of luxury. “Our inspiration comes from famous movie houses, like the ones from Father of the Bride and Home Alone, but with our touches and style,” says Tyge. The couple have used a bold and crisp Hamptons-style colour palette so far, which has created a timeless yet liveable feel throughout.
As Tyge is South African and Christina is American, there’s a high chance they’ll be accommodating overseas travellers for extended periods of time in the future. This is another big motivator for why they want to significantly transform their guest room. Currently it’s very timber heavy, which is impacting the freshness of the space.
“It’s really dark and dreary and in need of a makeover to make our guests feel a bit more welcome,” says Tyge. “So the vibe we’re going for is that we want this to feel like a hotel. We know we want a pop of colour and to get rid of some of this dark wood, but besides that we’re kind of stuck.”
At this stage in the game, the couple know that it’s highly recommended to get some expert advice, so, as they’ve done in the past, they paid a visit to their local Resene ColorShop.
Colour decoding
Resene Colour Expert Brenda Ngatai talked through colour options, showing their favoured hue – Resene Clouded Blue – on Resene colour charts and A4 drawdown paint swatches. Resene drawdowns are screen-printed samples and are a great way to test out colours in your home without having to lift a paintbrush. They’re made using real Resene paint and printed using silk screens in a similar process to what’s used when screen-printing billstickers, posters and T-shirts. Since authentic Resene paint is used, the drawdown swatch is true to colour showing the undertones and nuances of the paint in all its glory.
To use an A4 drawdown paint swatch at your place, stick the card to the wall using Blu Tack and observe the colour at different times of the day. Or create your own sample using a Resene testpot. Painting your sample onto a large piece of card (leaving a white border) instead of straight onto the wall will help you see the true colour and not be distracted by the existing colour on your walls. Paints have different undertones and levels of luminance (brightness), which may be more apparent when there is more or less light in a room.
