That 70s Reno: Alice and Caleb’s Parental Pad

Legendary renovators Alice and Caleb Pearson are finally tackling their own family dream home to undertake the non-demolition makeover – a transformation project they’ve dubbed That 70s Reno.

“The house was built 50 years ago for a family of six too,” Alice explains. “The layout is perfect, the location is a dream and it’s a renovation. To make the whole situation even better, there’s a minor dwelling for my parents, so we get to raise our kids with grandparents close by. We’ve called that the ‘Parental Pad.’”

So as they make their way through their house room by room, Alice and Caleb have also worked their signature magic on the Parental Pad, but it wasn’t as straightforward as they’d anticipated.

“The house itself was a bit of a challenge,” says Alice. ”Being a prefab, the walls were much thinner than standard, which made everything – from adding new plumbing to rewiring and installing new windows – significantly harder than expected. Beyond that, it was overrated and not practical, like the weird shub situation in the bathroom. And, of course, there was no deck outside, which made the space feel incomplete.”

Luckily this wasn’t the couple’s first rodeo. “A covered deck extension was a huge part of the vision. The biggest surprise for me was how much the original house improved with clever design and a great colour scheme. It turned a dated structure into something beautiful and functional.”

In classic Alice form, colour is king in the refresh, with an inspired palette of Resene paints and wallpapers bringing each of the inviting spaces to life. “We went for a retro-inspired look but with my own twist. Bold colours and patterns take centre stage, creating a vibrant, playful vibe while still feeling cohesive and intentional. It’s a mix of nostalgia and modern creativity, making the space truly one of a kind.”

A love of colour must run in the family, as Alice’s mum requested a green kitchen! So with that as a starting point, Alice complemented the cabinetry and terracotta tiles with Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Elderflower on the kitchen walls.

The light-filled lounge and dining space features Resene SpaceCote Low Sheen in Resene Calico on the walls. Alice’s dad cleverly hid a linen cupboard with a bespoke timber feature wall, which is stain washed with Resene Colorwood Breathe Easy. To elevate the space even further, Alice commissioned her artist friend Lilly to create one of her signature bold floral creations, which she brings to life with Resene testpots. “It really does make an impact on this wall and sets the tones for the other colours in the room.”

Alice’s inspired use of Resene wallpaper is a key feature in their family home, and she has brought the same textured impact into the Parental Pad. Alice and her dad wallpapered the main bedroom with Resene Summer Wallpaper Collection SUM405. “It had these really beautiful tones and patterns that were inspired by summer and living by the beach – it just felt like the perfect fit.” They used paper from the same collection for the study – Resene Summer Wallpaper Collection SUM102 – which has a more muted colour but lots of angles and patterns for vibrancy.

The upgrade of the bathroom and separate toilet were also significant – Alice used Resene Summer Wallpaper Collection CLR022 which is a lovely grey that works well with the tiles. It was continued along the hallway and into the toilet, with all the ceilings, doors and trims finished with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in Resene Alabaster

Despite all the magic worked on the inside, Alice says that the hero of the renovation was repainting the exterior in Resene Thor. “It completely elevated the look of the house and gave it such a unique, polished feel.”

The new covered deck area is like another room for year-round enjoyment. The deck was sealed with Resene Furniture and Decking Oil, with the posts, ceiling and bench seat painted in Resene Lumbersider Low Sheen in Resene Alabaster. Alice repurposed an outdoor table and painted the metal base in Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in Resene Emerge. The outdoor kitchen was built using off-cuts from the deck build and was also painted in Resene Lustacryl in Resene Emerge.

Friends and family have been blown away with the transformation, says Alice. “Seeing what Dad accomplished with his hands and hard work was the highlight for me. Even more than that, I love how this home has enriched my parents’ lives – simplifying their lifestyle while creating a warm, cosy environment for them to enjoy their retirement. Plus, it’s wonderful having a space where the grandchildren can easily visit and make memories.”

Alice’s parents love everything about their new abode. “The space has such a lovely feel – it’s functional and full of personality,” says Alice. “Their favourite part is definitely the deck. It’s become their haven for relaxing and entertaining, and I can already see it being the heart of many family gatherings.”
