Fun and practical outdoor projects

Take advantage of the warmer weather and get stuck into these outdoor projects. Some are practical, some are for the kids and others are just plain fun – and all can be finished with a coating of Resene paint or stain. All skill levels are catered to in this list and the projects featured can generally be completed over a weekend.

The wheel deal

This DIY go-kart is made from plywood and is finished with a lick of bright blue Resene Kitsch – but you can personalise yours with whatever Resene colour you like. The axles make it easy to manoeuvre and take corners with ease. There’s enough space for one big kid or two little ones, and don’t forget to wear your helmet!

Top tip: Your plywood cut list is very important here, so follow the diagram in the full step-by-step article here. If you get these measurements right, your go-kart should fit together perfectly like a puzzle.

House rules

Many of us have cute wooden cubby houses in our gardens, which gather moss and mould over the winter months when they’re out in the elements and not being played in regularly. The green stuff needs to be cleaned off, then any holes filled and sanded. Once your prep work is all done, brighten and refresh the structure with the kids’ choice of Resene paint colours, or if you want something to match your house, let your kids choose the indoor colours and you can choose the outside ones! For full instructions click here.

Top tip: To keep your cubby house clean, spray the outside with Resene Deep Clean once or twice a year to help keep it in good condition – no scrubbing needed. Resene Deep Clean will work with the weather over time to clean the surface. For a more immediate clean, wash down with Resene Paint Prep and Housewash.

Package deal

Thanks to the rise of online shopping, daytime parcel deliveries have become a regular occurrence for many of us. Creating this handy lockable courier box is an ideal mailbox alternative that also doubles as a cute seat, perfect for taking your shoes off. It’s made from plywood and has a hinged lid for easy access. The ply is primed with Resene Quick Dry, then coated with Resene Lustacryl semi-gloss waterborne enamel in Resene Eighth Truffle, but you can paint yours in any colour you like.

Top tip: Use letter stencils to label your courier box or decorate it with fun patterns using Resene testpots.

Get sorted

Tidy space, tidy mind as they say. Making this cool plywood pegboard for your tools keeps them on the wall and in easy reach, while the section of Resene FX Blackboard Paint is the perfect spot to write your to-do lists. For full instructions on how to make your own painter’s pegboard, click here

Top tip: If you’d prefer a coloured chalkboard finish, use Resene FX Chalkboard Paint tinted to your chosen colour instead of Resene FX Blackboard Paint.

Birds of a feather

Create a home for the feathered friends in your garden. You can either use offcuts of timber from another project, or you can buy some from your local timber supplier if you don’t have any leftovers. For full instructions on making your own, click here

A coating of Resene Furniture and Decking Oil gives it a professional looking finish and allows the natural beauty of the timber to take centre stage. If you decide to choose a darker colour use the Resene CoolColour option to help reflect more heat. You can also paint your birdhouse in your, or your kids’ favourite colours. It’s generally best to opt for mid to dark colours as very light colours can end up glary outside and show more marks.

Top tip: Place the birdhouse somewhere facing east to avoid strong sunlight and prevailing winds, and make sure it’s high enough off the ground so that predators can’t reach it.
